Candle Troubleshooting & Top Tips

The surface of the candle is not smooth

Our candles are made out of 100% soy wax, with no additives and preservatives. This means that if they are stored too long, or have gone through some temperature changes, their tops may start looking bumpy or a bit frosted. Don’t worry, the scent throw won’t be affected. This is perfectly natural!

Blackened edges of container

As long as you care for your candle, keeping the wick trimmed between burns, and keeping burn duration to about 3 hours then you shouldn’t experience much blackening of the container.

Blackening of the container is caused by soot when there is incomplete combustion of the fuel (the wax). The main cause of this is when the wick has gotten too long and is drawing up more liquid wax than the flame can combust and the extra is put off as soot. The sign that the wick is too long is if the flame is flickering around a lot even if not in a draft. To fix, extinguish the candle, trim the wick, and relight.

When the candle is extinguished and cool, you can use a damp tissue or cloth to wipe around any soot that has accumulated around the edges of the container.

Maximising your scent throw

If you put your candle by the open window, you won’t be able to smell it. The opposite is also true! To get the maximum scent throw from your beautiful candles, keep the doors and windows closed and for a minimum of 30 min to an hour.

Also, don’t burn your candles for longer than 4 hours as this can also impact the scent throw.

Spilt wax

You may have spilt some wax. It’s oi, we don’t judge. Wait for it to cool before attempting to clean up. If the spill was on a hard surface you can usually just pick the wax off with your hands. If the spill was on a material surface, you can try covering the spill with a paper towl and pressing gently with an iron on low heat. The spill should melt under the heat of the iron and get absorbed into the paper towel.

Storing candles

If you’re storing your candles for a long period of time, store them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Temperature and light can impact both candle wax and fragrances so it’s best not to leave them exposed to these conditions for long periods of time, especially if you won’t be using your candles for a while.

Safety precautions

  • Never leave a candle burning unattended. Make sure you extinguish candles before leaving a room or falling asleep.
  • Never burn your candle within half a meter, or about 2 feet, of anything that can catch on fire. Watch out for curtains, furniture, bedding, clothing, books, papers, carpet, etc.
  • Never touch or move a candle while it is lit. It can spill, and the container can also be unexpectedly hot! Extinguish and let cool before moving.
  • Don’t burn candles where there are draughts from fans or open windows. Any air movement in the room can cause the candle to burn unevenly.
  • Always keep the wick trimmed to 5-6mm between burns.
  • Extinguish a candle if the flame becomes too high or flickers repeatedly. Let cool and trim the wick before relighting.
  • Don’t burn your candle for longer than 4 hours at a time.
  • Never burn candles all the way down, always leave about 1.25 cm (half an inch) of wax at the bottom.
